DVD Hiring Spree

Another day, another entry.

Well, what did I do today? I went shopping in town. I bought a wondrous collection of random and posted it to this week's parcel winner. I bought about half of what I'll need to make a puppet of a chicken, I bought a gorgeous bag that I probably can't afford and I bought Dead Like Me on DVD. This is because I got halfway through an episode last night on the DVD I hired, and then the disc kept jumping. In terrible distress, I had to buy it new today, so I can see the rest.

Dead Like Me is my new TV show of recommendation. starlingthefool talked about it a lot when writing her House/Dead Like Me crossover. I'm not a fan of House but the concept intrigued me. I believe flippyfrog recommended it to me once too.

I have been checking out movies and TV shows that people have recommended to me or that I have repeatedly heard good things about. Obviously Dead Like Me is one of these and I absolutely LOVE IT! It's fabulous and I adore Reggie! Haven't finished the Season 1 DVD yet, so NOBODY SPOILER ME!

I've also checked out Weeds. I can't remember who told me it was good, but I loved Mary-Louise Parker in The West Wing, so I gave it a try. Loved this one too. I didn't fall in love with it like I did Dead Like Me but it was just so... I hate to use the word "offbeat", but that's what it is. And I adore that themesong. Good call whoever it was that suggested it to me.

The third of my TV experiments is something I never thought I'd like. Then, one day, bathmat mentioned she'd been having a My Name Is Earl marathon. I trust her opinion very much so when I was hiring DVDs and got the chance for a third TV show I thought I'd try it. I'm enjoying this one too. The concept is cute and I love the simplicity of the premise- "I'm just trying to be a better person". I love the kind of comedy where people wind themselves into situations and things get worse and worse, so I've been getting a good laugh out of this one. I think it takes a couple of episodes to get into, but once you know the characters it's great.

I also hired three movies I've never seen yesterday, but I've only watched one so far. I saw The Devil Wears Prada which I thought was good but not, you know, that good. I wouldn't buy it and rewatch it a million times, but I guess I wouldn't object to seeing it if someone else wanted to.

The second movie is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which I have heard so many good things about and always wanted to see. That might be the next one I watch. It does sound like my kind of movie. And this reminds me, I really must buy a copy of Being John Malcovitch, one of my favourite movies.

The last is Thankyou For Smoking, which I picked up as the third in the DVD deal, because I like the sound of the plot.

That's all from me, signing off...

And I really must find out how that episode of Dead Like Me ended...

Yay DLM! So good!
Also, Thank You For Smoking is cool because it has William H. Macy as a senator from Vermont. "The great state of Vermont will not apologize for its cheese!" Awesome.

TV shows you should totally get out on DVD:

1. Life on Mars
A British Police officer (Sam Tyler) gets hit by a car in 2006 and wakes up in 1973. This was on the ABC this year and was brilliant!

2. Gilmore Girls
Because we all need a schmoopy show that also has most excellent dialogue (and hawt manflesh)

3. Nighty Night
Enjoyed the Office? This one is... excruciating comedy but also brilliant. I can only watch one at a time, before succumbing to the OMG did she just do that -itis :D
