All new LITERARY meme!

What's this? A Kayt posting in the middle of the day? What can be afoot. Well... I am procrastinating, so I have decided to do a meme. Inspired by the musical meme, I have decided to do a literary meme. Ten books will be pulled from my shelves, and the first sentence of each posted up to challenge you. But... before I let you see them, I want to direct those of you who are literary-minded to a friend.

falkie recently lost a large part of her house in a fire. She has lost a heartbreaking number of books and is looking to replace them (she will pay). If you might be able to help her, please go along to her journal and check out the list of damaged titles. I was distressed by the sheer length of the list, so I hope someone can help.

Now you may see the meme:

10 First Lines

The rules, I should think, are obvious.

1. Will tugged at his mother's hand and said, "Come on, come on..."

2. It was Mrs. May who first told me about them.

3. It was a chill moonless night, the only light a raw glow from a fire in the stone-lined pit that reflected dully on the cobbles around its edge, and barely reached the walls surrounding the courtyard.

4. After a great deal of time examining oceans, investigating rainstorms, and staring very hard at several drinking fountains, the scientists of the world developed a theory regarding how water is distributed around our planet, which they have named "the water cycle".

5. Once on a dark winter's day, when the yellow fog hung so thick and heavy in the streets of London that the lamps were lighted and the shop windows blazed as they do at night, an odd-looking little girl sat in a cab with her father, and was driven rather slowly through the big thoroughfares.

(And I thought number 3 was a bit long...)

6. "Christmas won't be Christmas without any presents," grumbled Jo, lying on the rug.

7. The two men appeared out of nowhere, a few yards apart in the narrow, moonlit lane.

8. There was a boy called Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it.

9. February 6. I don't know what I am doing here.

10. Some things start before other things.

And extra points if you can guess the theme I was working with here.
