I am the NaNoWriMonster!

Observe My Progress Report!

It has occured to me that there may be those on the Flist who actually have no earthly idea what my NaNoWriMo novel is actually supposed to be about. I talk about it all the time, but have I ever actually summarised it? No... I don't think I have.

And that's a good thing, because I have finally settled on the plot I think is going to work. Indulge me?

My novel is called Terey Isabella. In Orisi (the equivalent of Latin), the title has two possible translations: "Beloved Isabelle", or "Everything Isabelle". The story is set in the Land of the Five Kingdoms, and specifically, the Kingdom of Lora. Lora is under the control of the Opakiyn, who usurped the Queen. Think "How To Be An Evil Oligarchy For Pleasure and Profit".

Plot, you ask?

Well, basically, Isabelle Darkmoor was the Perfect Princess. She was everything a mythological princess is supposed to be: beautiful, compassionate, devoted to her people, talented and wise. Except she was real. Izzy Darkmoor was a a genius: scholar, artist, musician, poet, inventor, scientist, Sorceress, Seer and healer. She invented the lightswitch and the elevator, she cared for her invalid mother, raised her baby brother and most importantly, she was the protector of her people and their advocate with the Opakiyn. Pretty much did everything right.

The Opakiyn kept Isabelle and her family under house-arrest for ten years. Then, one day, apparently out of the blue, they murdered her and tried to expunge her from history. Her name is banned. Anyone who speaks of her is exectuted, and all images and written records of her have been destroyed.

Of course, that never works, and seven years later, there is no one willing to continue the fight Isabelle began. There's no point because everyone knows Izzy Darkmoor is coming back to drive away the Opakiyn and take her place as Queen.

Enter into this scenario Gwynnie Haraka, who suspects that she is the only person in the world who thinks dead Princesses coming back to life to save us all is a load of rubbish. Gwynnie's a pro-active girl, so she decides to go on a Quest to rectify the situation. She's going to uncover the truth behind the Perfect Princess, find out what she did or knew that got her killed, prove she's never coming back and thus beat it into her fellow citizens that they have to take some initiative and defeat the Opakiyn themselves.

She gathers together your traditional motley crew of Questers, and begins a search for the answers to the pressing questions. But it's infinitely more complicated then she realised, for any number of reasons. Turns out Isabelle Darkmoor had at least one secret lover, and the poetry she wrote focuses heavily on blood and death. As if that weren't enough, Gwynnie's being stalked by strange people wearing all black or all white. Apparently there's some sort of 3000-year-old Holy War going on.

And that's just the beginning. The story is really three stories: it's about Gwynnie's search for the truth and her fight to defeat the Opakiyn. It's also about a low-key Holy War that takes place in back-streets when no one's looking. Plus, it's a retrospective tale of Izzy Darkmoor, who, as is quickly apparent, wasn't quite the Perfect Princess she had her people believe.

At least, that's the gist of it. God knows how it can be written as a bitty blurb. The fun part is the part where it's not really a story about Gwynnie. She'd hate that.

Mm. First time I've seen any kind of outline of Questers. Sounds very cool. And I kind of love the Evil Oligarchy - Dark Lords are so passe.

Hehe... of course the plot of Questers is infinitely more complicated. TI is just the first part, as you know. And it's turning out to be a lot longer than it is supposed to be. Whoops.

And I'm so glad I got myself the Opakiyn. Though, there may still be a Dark Lord lurking somewhere... Or not... :P
