Songs about Death.

Not because I want to be maudlin, but because it's an interesting subject. Have you ever noticed how a lot of songs about death are disguised. You might not even know they're about death.

I was listening to the radio in the car one day and I decided to start compiling a list of songs about death.

Here goes the list so far:

Adam’s Song- Blink 182
Not only death, but suicide. I think "Give all my things to all my friends, you'll never set foot in my room again" is fairly conclusive. Anyone know if Adam was a real person?

Let Me Die Young- Taxiride
Fairly unsubtle title, really. Written for one of their sisters.

American Pie- Don McLean
And no, the music is not the one who's dead. I hope no one is ignorant of the subject matter on this one.

Night Must Fall- Hoodoo Gurus
This one took me a while to notice. AIDS, I think.

The River- Missy Higgins
The kid drowns in the river.

Charlie- Split Enz
Dude wakes up in the morning and realises he beat his girlfriend so bad he killed her. So depressing.

Shine- Vanessa Amorosi
Her producer actually made her replace the word "DIE" with "SHINE". All the other words remain the same.

The Show Must Go On- Queen
Freddy wrote it when he was dying of AIDS.

Unforgiveable Sinner- Lene Marlin
At least, I think so. If anyone else has even heard of it, what do you think?

Eleanor Rigby- The Beatles
Poor old Eleanor. Sucks to be you.

No More Cry- The Corrs
Their mother died of cancer, I think. They wrote the song for their dad anyway.

Top of the World- Dixie Chicks
Deathbed confessions of a man who wasn't nice.

Travelin’ Soldier- Dixie Chicks
And of course, he dies in Vietnam.

Does anyone else have any to add to my collection. I'm particularly interested in songs you might hum along to, never listening to the words and then realise "My Goodness! That's about dying!"

I can think of quite a few. The 'meaning' and relationship to death is really my own interpretation and might be totally wrong:

Maggie by Colin Hay - about a girl who commits suicide.
The Art of Suicide by Emilie Autumn - looks at the glamouristaion (if that's a word) of suicide.
I Will Follow You Into The Dark by Death Cab For Cutie - the importance of people and dealing with loss after death
Vincent by Don McLean - not too sure if this is fully about death, but is a tribute to Vincent van Gogh and has references to his mental health and suicide.
Hear, You, Me by Jimmy Eat World - about someone who has died, the singer talking about missed experience and not properly taking the person for granted while they were alive.
The Reaper, not sure who did this originally but I have a cover by The Beautiful South - fear of death/Grim Reaper
Janie's Got A Gun by Aerosmith - about a girl killing her father after he abused her.
Together Again by Janet Jackson - about being reunited in death
Cassie by Flyleaf - I think this is about some of the school shootings in America

I dont have any to add... but to answer the Blink 182 question: adam was a real person...an associate or old friend of some short...it was inspired by an event

Hello - Evanexcence
About Amy Lees sister who died...

Shadow of the Day - Linkin Park
"the shadow of the day will embrace the world in grey and the sun will set for you." About the inevitability of death.

Can't think of any at the moment, but the topic reminds me of a response a Dutch comedian / songwriter gave to an accusation that his songs were only about death:

"Is there something else, then?"

I don't like mondays... dont know by who though.

"I dont like mondays, i dont like mondays. Tell me why? I want to shoo...oooooot.... the whole day down."

This was written about a high school shooting in America. When the girl was asked why she did it she said "I don't like mondays"

I am honestly done this time :)
