Pottering along...

Almost forgot!!! Who's a naughty blogger then?

Tonight I go to bed/sleep early (or at least attempt to). In the morning, Clare, Aimee, Jen and I are off to see "The Order of the Phoenix". That's got me thinking about hype.

My brother, citizen_cam does not approve of hype. Sometimes I agree, but Harry Potter has got me thinking. It's fun.

It's fun to be caught up in the hype about something. It's fun to learn little things slowly, one at a time. It's fun to talk about an upcoming book or movie, and then talk again after the release! It's fun to be excited about something you've been waiting for. It's fun to be right!

Hype, when you get down to it, is good fun. I've bought into the HP hype, and though I was at first a little embarrassed about it, now I'm feeling okay about it. I'm excited. Tomorrow I'm going to the movies to share an experience with friends. I'm being a sheep and I'm following the crowd, and so what?

Apart from certain REALLY REALLY LOONY sections of it, the crowd is having a fabulous time. Why shouldn't I let myself get caught up in the predicting and the theorising and the waiting and wondering? Yes, yes, conformity bad, be yourself and so on and so forth. But we all conform, don't we? We have to conform, or we'd be entirely alone. I choose to conform by letting myself get caught up in hype. I choose to be exploited by cynical marketing ploys.

Frequently I am detached and disinterested. So... if all this hype about Harry Potter and The Cash Cow is encouraging me to be interested in something; and something I can talk to other people about, moreover... I say it's a good thing.

So, I'm not going to put on my cloak and call myself Hermione. But I am going to see that movie on it's opening day, and I'm collecting my book from Borders as soon as it comes out. And my free toy Hedwig, too!

Why? Because it may not be great literature, and it certainly isn't great film. But it's great fun. And it's great fun that a group of people can share... even if you've never met. Through an anonymous website, or standing in line with other keen cinema patrons- you're sharing an experience. You're connecting with the people around you.

Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Obernewtyn... Life is filled with hype... Might as well go with it and have some darn good fun.

Well, if you're succumbing to hype...
AT LEAST SUPPORT THE LITTLE PEOPLE, NOT EVIL GLOBALISATION MASTERS BORDERS! :D

I do not, indeed, approve of "hype", but what you're describing sounds more like fandom to me. There's nothing wrong with a little healthy geekdom. I can't criticise fans (said he of the "I Grok Spock" mentality), but I'm sorry, once you make a concious decision to dress up you lose your right not to be mercilessly mocked by merciless mockers like me.

I agree. It's just plain old fun to get caught up in a craze, talk about it with fellow crazers and count down to future craze events.

I've managed to drop out of the HP craze since reading Order of the Phoenix. I kind of wish I was up to date, rushing out to buy the last installment with everyone else. I'll just have to enjoy the new movie instead, and continue to watch out for spoilers.

I have also totally bought into the Harry Potter hype. We I first met Mr Scruffy, I had managed to be scornful of the whole HP thing, but he was totally hooked. It didn't take long for me to become hooked too, and now I have my ticket for the movie, and my ticket for the book (and my free Hedwig!) and I'm excited and bouncy. I say enjoy the hype - there is time enough to be sensible later.
