Kayt Visits the Oncologist

Today, my Dad and I went to see Dr. Leong. He's the oncologist, and has letters after his name and stuff.

crazedturkey, she of Medical Student Insiderness told me he's nice, and he is. He seemed much less pessimistic too. I just want to kick my GPs arse for telling me I was going to die. While I notice no doctor is willing to tell me it'll all be fine, Dr. Leong seems to think the primary cancer may have receded altogether. All the same, I'm going to Sydney to get a PET scan, where I have to lie still for a whole hour! Yurk! Then I'm going to a dermatologist, so he can look all over my skin to see if he can identify anything suspicious.

The absolute minimum scenario is that they won't find a primary, or any other secondaries. In that event, I have to go into surgery again to have a larger area taken out around the melanoma. Also, they'll chop out anything that looks even remotely cancerous. And then there'll be several years of check ups every few months, to check for anything that might pop up.

Nobody (apart from the over-reacting, apparentally ignorant, "you're going to die" GP) will tell me what the worst case scenario is, and I don't really want to know.

We'll see what happens when I have the PET scan. Still, things are looking much more positive then they were.

I just want to kick my GPs arse for telling me I was going to die.

Yes...I can TOTALLY understand why!! Glad to hear the prognosis is looking increasingly better - and yay for second opinions.

This new oncologist sounds v.v. good and knowledgeable. I can't believe your GP was that maudlin around you, don't they teach them NOT to do that in first year med? Pfft! Well, bollocks to that guy anyway.

Do you want me to spikeify the frame and run down your GP, I'll do it! Great to hear you've got at least one decent Dr around (not including Turks of course)
